It has been reported today that after being awarded Victorian Senior Australian of the Year last night in Melbourne, Uncle Jack Charles was refused transport by two successive taxi drivers.
The taxi industry takes these allegations very seriously and investigations into the events will continue today as more details become available. Our first pripority it to obtain sufficient information to identify the vehicles and drivers involved so action can be taken to respond as soon as possible.
If indeed these allegations are true, swift action will be taken to send a clear message to these drivers that this behaviour will not be tolerated and is completely unacceptable.
The VTA would like to take the opportunity to make clear that the Victorian taxi industry does not accept discimination of any kind. Victorian taxis conduct 100,000 trips per day on average largely without incident.
The investigation into the reported events will contonue as more information becomes available. Further updates will be posted here.
