The VTA held its Annual Lunch on the first Thursday of December at Leonda by the Yarra in Hawthorn. The lunch is always a great opportunity to reflect on the previous 12 months, catch up with industry colleagues and prepare for the year ahead.
It was an enjoyable day for all involved, bringing together more than 140 taxi industry participants, including operators, networks, industry suppliers, regulators and VTA Cuff Link Holders.
VTA President Kevin Gange opened the day and acknowledged the enormity of the year that has been and pointed out that 2016 will be about ensuring our relevance as an industry is maintained and understood.
He then announced Kevin Dunn of Frankston Taxis as this year’s recipient of the VTA Cuff Links. Kevin’s contributions to the taxi industry and the VTA Executive Council goes back well over 15 years. During his time on the Council he was an advocate of his network, affiliates and customers in Frankston and of the needs of urban taxi businesses in other areas. Kevin continues to do outstanding work for the benefit of the industry as a whole.
Grahame Currie was the keynote speaker for the day. Graham is the Chair of Public Transport at Monash University and has extensive experience in public transport projects and strategies. He shared his perspective and insight on technology, transport and cities; the regulation of ride hail, the taxi climate in Australia and his owns views on the future of taxis and ride hail services. Guests were interested to hear from someone with such extensive knowledge and expertise.
David Samuel, VTA CEO, wrapped up the formalities by briefly outlining some of the bigger issues the industry has faced in a challenging year.
Delicious food, beautiful views of the Yarra River and great entertainment by Fem Belling and her band topped off a wonderful afternoon.
The VTA was grateful to have Toyota, ROVA Media and Cabcharge as Gold Sponsors and would again like to thank them for their support throughout the year.
