Taxi Ranks

The VTA provides consultancy in the planning, design and implementation of taxi services at major events and venues, as well as ranks across the suburbs.

Major ranks, which the VTA continues to address are:

  • Australian Formula One Grand Prix
  • Melbourne and Olympic Parks Sporting Precinct
  • Docklands
  • South Bank
  • Crown Casino
  • Station Pier
  • Melbourne Airport
  • Safe City Ranks

In the CBD, some taxi ranks are designed to be easier and safer for use, especially at night.

Taxi totems provide travel information in tactile and Braille text and a light that can be activated to alert passing taxis to stop.

Safe City taxi ranks

The Safe City Taxi Rank Scheme aims to provide safe clean passge home late at night.

Safe City taxi ranks, managed by the City of Melbourne, provide a safer environment for passengers waiting for a taxi and for taxi drivers waiting for passengers.

The City of melbourne is committed to incresing the number of safe ranks and recently added 190 Bourke Street. This is the first of several new Safe City Taxi Ranks to be established during the next four years.

Safe City Taxi Ranks are located in improved popular pedestrian routes with lighting and signage and Safe City security cameras. They can be found in four locations:

  • 55 King Street
  • Flinders Street Station, Swanston Street
  • 50 Bourke Street (near Spring Street)
  • 190 Bourke Street (near Russell Street)

Each taxi rank is staffed by a security officer in a distinct uniform.

Hours of Operation:

  • from 11pm Friday to 5am Saturday
  • from 11pm Saturday to 5am Sunday every weekend
  • during special events such as the Melbourne Grand Prix and New Year's Eve
