In the context of safety fears that have arisen following the emergence of ride-sharing apps, the VTA strongly supports any efforts to ensure the safety of taxi passengers and drivers.

The Minister has provided a grant to support an innovative program to increase safety of taxi passengers and driver in Geelong.  Already underway is the use of video cameras by marshalls at safe city ranks in Geelong, which will be complemented by the introduction in coming weeks of technology to record passenger and vehicle details via a dedicated app which has been developed by Geelong City Council in consultation with the Victorian Privacy Commissioner.
