So you want to become a taxi driver?

Taxi-cab drivers who do not operate their own taxi-cab are almost always "Bailee Drivers". This means they are self-employed running their own small business. They pay taxi-cab operators (Bailors) rent to "bail" a taxi-cab for a bailment period and they retain the money earned through fares other than the rent.

Bailee drivers negotiate the rent of a taxi-cab from a bailor. This can be organsied in a number of ways. Both parties must agree to the terms of the bailment., Given that bailee taxi-cab drivers are self-employed, they are responsible for:

1. Regulating their own work and rest hours, for safety and productivity.
2. Abiding by all rules and regulations.
3. Abiding by all Network service Provider rules.
4. Keeping the taxi clean and tidy.
5. Driving safely.
6. Assisting passengers where necessary.
7. Lost property.
8. Notifying Bailor of vehicle problems.
9. Notifying Bailor of cancellation of their Victorian Drivers license.or driver accreditation.

Bailee drivers are required to be registered for the Goods and Services Tax (GST), irrespective of their earnings. Bailee drivers must have an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Additionally, bailee drivers in Metropolitan Melbourne must have their own Taxi E-tag, for use on the CityLink tollways. Outer Suburban and non-metropolitan drivers can purchase day passes when travelling into Melbourne.

Metropolitan Taxi-cab Drivers must hold a Melbourne Airport Access Card if they wish to use the airport taxi system to obtain hirings from the airport.
